NURSES MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE!

NURSES MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE!

Hi there. This is Shannon the founder of Nurse Nutz. I wanted to share part of my journey with you that led to me becoming a nurse.

When I was 16 years old I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. As you can imagine, this was quite the unexpected surprise. I was thrown into the world of insulin regimens / shots, blood glucose checks, snacks, set meal times, and all the worries in between. Aside from my supportive family, the biggest reason I was able to take diabetes head on were my 2 diabetes nurse educators. Julie & Patti helped to teach me what diabetes was, as well as how to fit it into my life so that it didn't control my life.

Neither one of them had diabetes. So, I started to think - wow - they have helped me so much, how great would it be if I became a nurse and diabetes educator and help kids with diabetes like me. So, I did. I graduated from High School, went to Nursing school and got my dream job as a Pediatric Nurse working in Diabetes Education day 1 of my career. 3 years later I got my Certified Diabetes Educator credential. For about 15 years that was my career.

Not only would I not be a nurse if I had not gotten diabetes, but I would not have had the amazing career of caring for so many children, teens, and young adults with diabetes had it not been for Patti & Julie and their impact on my life. So nurses - wherever you find yourself working today - please know that you can never be certain of the life changing impact you could have on a patient.

Truly, nurses make a BIG DIFFERENCE!
