The fanny pack, as we know it, is often attributed to Australian designer Melba Stone, who is said to have invented the accessory in 1962. While there’s no verified patent under her name, the idea of the fanny pack was to create a hands-free way to carry items securely, especially for outdoor enthusiasts. Another claim to fame comes from a U.S. designer, Stephen Yost, who allegedly created and patented the first official fanny pack design in 1968.

Though the exact origins are a bit cloudy, the fanny pack has long been associated with practical, functional use. Early designs were meant to help hikers and adventurers keep their hands free while accessing items easily. From there, the fanny pack's functionality caught on in various industries, eventually becoming a mainstream fashion accessory.

          7. Funny Stories of How Nurses Use Fanny Packs

Nurses are known for their resourcefulness, and the ways they use fanny packs can be both practical and hilarious:

One nurse used hers to store extra syringes—and an emergency chocolate bar—during a chaotic shift.

A nurse on the night shift shared a story of stuffing her fanny pack with not only bandage scissors but also packets of instant coffee for that caffeine boost.

A pediatric nurse once packed hers with stickers and bubbles to entertain patients while keeping medical supplies in another compartment.

Nurses have used their fanny packs to carry extra gloves—because you never know when a glove will break!

Another nurse admitted to having stashed an emergency burrito in her fanny pack because there wasn’t time for a lunch break!

            8. My Personal Journey with Fanny Packs

Well, I got my first fanny pack—a hot pink, rather obnoxious one—back in the 80s when they first became a thing! I felt so cool wearing it, rocking the latest trend with pride. Little did I know how important fanny packs would become in my life.

In the 90s, fanny packs took on new meaning for me when I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. At Florida Diabetes Camp, every camper and staff member was given a fanny pack to carry snacks, blood glucose meters, strips, lancets, insulin, and syringes. It was a vital part of our day-to-day lives, and we joked about being “Dorks for Diabetes,” especially those of us who wore two fanny packs at once! These memories are close to my heart.

Later on, I became a Diabetes Camp Counselor, and of course, I kept wearing fanny packs—this time filled with supplies for both me and my campers. When I became a Diabetes Camp Nurse, my professional responsibilities expanded, and I upgraded to backpacks (See Nurse Backpacks Here) to fit all the extra gear. But the fanny pack was always there, helping me carry the essentials. I guess once a “Dork for Diabetes,” always one, right!?

The fanny packs we used at camp were usually provided by pharmaceutical companies, used year after year, cleaned, stored, and taken out for the next camp session. They were a blessing, a practical tool that kept everything within arm’s reach.

In fact, I recently rediscovered my original hot pink fanny pack. It’s old but still looks brand new, and I even took it with me for a day at SeaWorld! That’s right—I proudly strapped it around my waist, and it was perfect for a theme park day. So, yes, I am a fanny pack person. Maybe not on a daily basis, but there are certain days when they are absolutely the best option.

For me, fanny packs are tied to some of my fondest memories, especially from diabetes camp. And now, as I’m building the Nurse Nutz Fanny Pack CollectionI know I’ll make room for a new one. You totally should too! Whether it’s for the job, camp, or a fun day out, a Nurse Nutz fanny pack can be your new go-to accessory.
